Pasquale: Nineteenth Century Yuma Chief, Peacemaker, Assimilationist and Convert to Christianity
Deborah Williams
|
The paper will focus on the nineteenth century Yuma Chief, Pasquale, and his peacemaking and assimilationist efforts in Arizona and California. A primary emphasis will be on his positive social interaction and good relations with the military at Fort Yuma (specifically with Major Heintzelman) and with the teaching staff, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, at Fort Yuma Indian School who Pasquale held in high regard as educators and as Christians.
A secondary emphasis will be on Pasquale's assimilationist views on the education of the Yuma, his conversion to Christianity, and his death and cremation in 1887. Background information and description of the nineteenth century Yuma Indians, Fort Yuma, Fort Yuma Indian School, and Yuma, Arizona will be provided with slides.
This presentation is based on research done by Deborah Williams. As a Doctoral candidate in Education at Greenleaf University, St. Louis, Missouri, and historian of American History, Deb’s historical interests include the History of American Education and American Women Educators, the Education of Women and the Native American. Deb holds two masters degrees, one in Library Science and one in History from East Carolina University. Professionally, she has served as an adjunct professor and teaching fellow at various colleges. She is a member of the Arizona Historical Society, the Pioneer Cemetery Association and our Corral. Deb and her husband, Bill and seven cats reside in Queen Creek. Due to a recent accident in which Deb fell and broke both her legs, Bill Williams will be presenting his wife Deb's research on Pasquale.
